Scholarship Description
The iMATCH project investigates how policy environs interact with built and social environs to positively influence children’s independent mobility, active travel and physical activity to improve health outcomes. The project will survey children aged 10-13 years in matched neighbourhoods based on primary schools where policy and programs differ but built and social environments are similar. The research audits environmental features of neighbourhoods and policy interventions surveying children and parents on outdoor play, attitudes and perceptions towards travel and measuring children’s activities using an accelerometry/GPS approach. The project is a key study conducted by a team of internationally recognised experts from Griffith University, Curtin University, CQU, University of Melbourne and UNSW. The scholarship will support a PhD student focusing on influences of the policy environment on children and household travel behaviour using travel diaries, GIS and spatial analysis.
Availability
This scholarship is offered once only to one person. Open for applications until March 25, 2011.
Payment Information
The value of this scholarship is AUD$27651 (per annum). This award is to be used for living expenses. This scholarship is paid fortnightly for the period of 3 years.

Eligibility
This scholarship is for study in Australia for those who have achieved Honours 1 or equivalent, or Honours 2a or equivalent. Only citizens of Australia or New Zealand or AUS permanent resident can apply.

Discovery Children’s Active Travel, Connectedness and Health project
Scholarship Description
The Children’s Active Travel, Connectedness and Health project (CATCH) project examines how factors of the social and built environment influence the independent mobility, active travel and the overall health of Australian children across a range of urban environments. The scholarship will support a PhD student whose work will focus primarily on the travel behaviour results of the research. This will include data from travel diaries, global positioning systems and qualitative datasets, focus of the research is likely to be children’s bicycle riding. The scholar will assist with fieldwork in the school environment. The student will be supervised by Dr Matthew Burke at the Urban Research Program, Griffith University. Students interested in fields such as transport and land use planning, GIS, non-motorised transport and travel behaviour studies are urged to apply. Applicants will need to be eligible for a Blue card under the Queensland child protection framework.
