One of reasons some people don't like to cycle is because bicycle helmets tend to be rather ugly. Yakkay make a rather stylish looking helmet with a range of different covers. They don't have an outlet in Australia but they do look good. Unfortunately they will probably still give you helmet hair, but at least you can look stylish whilst on the bike. Copenhagen not only has an immense amount of cyclists, they also love to look good on their bikes. Have a look at this blog documenting Copenhagen Cycle Chic. Helmets are conspicuously absent, maybe they have not discovered the stylish Yakkay helmets.
